12 OctOctober is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

In remembrance of our babies born too soon, the HOPE Group is posting the following 1988 Presidential Proclamation declaring October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.  Since 1988 the world has seen many changes, but pregnancy loss continues.  Let us reflect this month and support those newly bereaved and those whose loss is still close to our hearts.

Each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the U.S. end in miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of the newborn child. National observance of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn and newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members on work to prevent causes of these problems.

Health care professionals recognize that trends of recent years, such as smaller family size and postponement of childbearing, adds another dimension of poignancy to the grief of parents who have lost infants. More than 700 local, national and international support groups are supplying programs and strategies designed to help parents cope with their loss. Parents who have suffered their own losses, health care professionals and specially trained hospital staff members are helping newly bereaved parents deal constructively with loss…

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 314, has designated the month of October, as “Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month” and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this month.

NOW, THEREFORE, I RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the month of October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of October in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirteenth.

Ronald Reagan

28 SepA Concert to Remember

The North Shore Chapter of the Compassionate Friends would like to share information regarding a Concert to Remember.  The concert is a fundraiser for Ben Speaks.

Ben Speaks (www.benspeaks.org) is holding its annual fundraiser on 11-11-11 in Newton Centre, MA.  It is entitled “A Concert To Remember” where we use music to take the audience through the various stages of the grief process with music. Also included is a candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones.

This year we welcome the very talented recording artist, singer/songwriter Karen Taylor-Good (www.karentaylorgood.com) to headline the concert. Karen is the composer of the Compassionate Friends’ song “Precious Child” and will be performing it at this concert.

Ben Speaks is in the process of producing a recording entitled “Forever In My Heart”, a compilation of 16 songs donated by several musicians from the Empower Music Association (of which Karen is a member). “Precious Child” is included on this CD and it will be available at the 11-11-11 concert for a mere $5.00 suggested donation.

Contact the North Shore Chapter of the Compassionate Friends’ Executive Director, Judy Giovangelo at 617-592-6715 or judygio@aol.com for more information.  Click here to view the concert flier and learn more about the fundraiser.

15 SepR U OK?

How many times are we, the bereaved, asked are we ok?  It’s an important question and one that we don’t always answer truthfully…probably because the person asking doesn’t always want to hear the answer.  Hopefully this post will encourage everyone asking R U OK? to truly mean it.

Thursday, September 15, 2011 is RUOK? Day in Australia.  It is a national day of action that aims to prevent suicide by encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about and help stop little problems turning into big ones.

On this day everyone across the country, from all backgrounds and walks of life, are encouraged to ask family, friends and colleagues: “Are you OK?”.

Because staying connected with others is crucial to our general health and well-being. Feelings of isolation and being alone are major contributing factors to depression and social issues that can ultimately result in suicide. Regular, meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love.

It’s so simple but in the time it takes to have a coffee, you can start a conversation that could change a life.  Read more…
